About
Karen Rexrode

Karen
Rexrode
began working at Kenny Roberts Garden Center in 1976. She opened her own
nursery "Windy Hill Plant Farm" in 1981 so that she could stay home with her small children
and still keep working in horticulture. Windy Hill grew and grew, specializing in perennials
and fun annuals, most plants were grown on site. The nursery closed, shutting its doors in
September of 2005, a wonderful party was held at Ida Lee Park by Master Gardeners to say
farewell to Windy Hill and thank Karen for the many years of horticultural service. Karen
currently works at Oak Hill, an estate in Loudoun County and at the Fair Oaks Branch of
Merrifield Garden Center. You can also find her artwork for sale at the Lorton Workhouse,
she works out of her studio in Manassas and loves to dabble in the art of mixed media.
Gardeners develop a love of
certain plants, a sentimental attachment that can blind them to alternatives.
This lecture is about using plants that use fewer resources, sort of the skinny
on gardening with ornamentals. We will look at plants that use less time, give
more and fit into the local landscape in a desirable way.
